To feed the world’s ever-growing population, we will need to produce as much food in the next 40 years as we have in the last 8,000.

This is according to estimates that by 2050, the Earth’s population will jump to 9 billion. This is also based on the (somewhat dubious) assumption that in that same period of time, incomes will rise, tripling on average, with incomes quadrupling in the developing world. Assuming population growth, higher incomes, and the fact that higher incomes lead to an increase in food consumption leads to the conclusion that the demand for food will rise astronomically.

Of course, since every pound of meat requires 7 pounds of grain to produce, and another 3-4 pounds are required to produce a pound of eggs or cheese, one way to solve this problem is if the majority of the                                                                                        world transitions to a vegan diet. Of course, compared to that, the 2012 doomsday doesn’t sound all                                                                                    all that bad.
